Annual Chrism Mass Celebrated in June

On June 16, Bishop Thomas Daly celebrated the chrism Mass with a small congregation and only a few priests, all seated six feet apart. The celebration of the chrism Mass is ordinarily during Holy Week, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Vatican allowed for diocesan bishops to delay the Mass until a public celebration could occur.

The chrism Mass has two unique liturgical features. One is the blessing of the holy oils that will be used throughout the diocese in the coming year, including the chrism oil, from which the Mass takes its name. The other unique feature of this Mass is the renewal, by the priests of the diocese, of the promises they made at ordination. This Mass celebrates the unity of the priests and diocese.
