End-of-year gift planning already?
It may seem like the holidays are still far off — but if you blink, it’ll be Advent, and then Christmas, and then … January. That’s why now is the perfect time to start thinking about your year-end charitable giving plans.
We know that the last few months of the year are when most people make their most meaningful gifts. It’s a natural time for reflection on the blessings we’ve received and how we might give back. It’s also a practical time, as many donors look for opportunities to make a positive impact while taking advantage of potential tax benefits.
At The Catholic Foundation of the Diocese of Lansing, we’re here to help you make the most of your generosity with gifts that are both spiritually fulfilling and financially wise.
Here are a few ways you can prepare now.
1. Make a Gift of Appreciated Stock
Gifting appreciated securities, such as stocks or mutual funds, can be a smart way to give. You may avoid capital gains taxes while receiving a charitable deduction for the full market value.
2. Use Your IRA for a Tax-Free Gift
If you’re 70½ or older, you can make a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from your IRA directly to a Catholic ministry. This type of gift may count toward your required minimum distribution (RMD) and isn’t included in your taxable income.
3. Give from a Donor-Advised Fund (DAF)
If you have a DAF, consider recommending a grant to your parish, Catholic school, or favorite ministry before year-end. It’s a simple way to support what you love most about your Catholic faith.
4. Leave a Legacy
This season is also a great time to review your estate plans. Adding a Catholic ministry as a beneficiary on a retirement account or life insurance policy is easy, impactful, and costs you nothing today.
And remember: when you notify us of a planned gift, we’ll welcome you into the Immaculate Conception Legacy Society, a special community of faithful Catholics who are helping secure the future of the Church through legacy giving.
Don’t wait until the last week of December when the calendar — and your to-do list! — is full. A little planning now ensures your gift is made with intention and joy and will reach those who need it most.
We’d be honored to help you plan a year-end gift that reflects your faith and values.
