What is it like working for FAITH Magazine?

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

FAITH Magazine’s feature articles are provided by a number of excellent freelance writers and photographers, who are commissioned to cover stories the length and breadth of the Diocese of Lansing. We asked some of our regular contributors to say how they feel about working for the magazine. Here’s what they had to say.

Kathryn and George Mietelka (photographers)

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. (Jn 1:5)

The word photography means “to draw with light.” This fact is not lost on us as Catholics. For us, photography is more than a job — it’s an invitation to use our gifts to reveal the Light of Christ to the world. While we primarily photograph Catholic weddings,
we also embrace any opportunity to document the beauty of the Liturgy and of the human person. We find tremendous value in photographing for FAITH Magazine, as it gives us unique opportunities to meet other individuals in our diocese and document their stories of faith. Every photo shoot for FAITH leaves us inspired in our own journey. We are honored to contribute in sharing that inspiration with our cameras.

Mary Gates (writer)

The truth that God works, speaks, acts, and moves in each person’s life uniquely has been confirmed time and time again in my nearly 10 years of writing for FAITH Magazine.  In that time I have traveled around the diocese to interview lay people, religious, and those discerning. I have interviewed some who are near death, as well as the young and vibrant. I have sat across from men and women who have endured immense suffering, and some who have been miraculously healed. In each case, I am tasked with the tremendous honor of telling the story of how God has been at work, and, in every instance, I learn more fully the truth that
the Lord never stops pursuing his people in love.

Maria Servold (writer)

I began writing for FAITH Magazine eight years ago because I wanted to find a way to knit together my Catholic faith and my vocation to journalism. It has been such a joy to tell stories about the Catholic Church, its members, and their stories of faith in the
magazine. We can often feel that our chosen careers are separate from or don’t work in tandem with our faith. Much of my early-career journalism work did not allow me to be open about my faith in my writing. It has been a great joy to be able to use my skill and passion to help build God’s kingdom.

It has been a blessing to contribute my God-given photographic talent to FAITH Magazine. There is so much beauty in our faith. both spiritually and visually. Capturing and sharing the beauty of God’s people, his churches, and the good works happening right here in our diocese are a powerful form of evangelization. I’m thankful that God has called me to serve him in this creative and fulfilling way!
