Attending the Catholic Mass can be overwhelming for someone with Autism SpectrumDisorder (ASD). The format of the Liturgy may be difficult to understand and follow, especially if the child is older, and has not beenattending Mass with the family.
It is fairly common practice thatfamilies with loved ones who have ASD feel the challenges of bringingthe whole family to Mass each week is extremely difficult, orimpossible. Often times the parents and other siblings will attenddifferent Masses to facilitate someone staying home with their loved one during Mass to resolve this dilemma. Although that solution works inthe short-run, it actually can lead to further isolation, loss of aFaith community and frustration for the family in the long-run.

Individuals with ASD thrive on routines and structure. You might say the CatholicMass would, in that regard, be an ideal setting! It can be! However, the key is to build a supportive environment for success! This Mass guidewas created as a tool for individuals and families to use whenfamiliarizing, introducing, and attending Mass with their loved one whohas ASD. The normal Order of the Mass is the foundation of the guideusing carefully chosen photographs to provide visual learners with aformat that works for them. The photographs are accompanied bysimplified, meaningful explanations and prayers. The Mass guide alsoincludes a full section of the photographs of Holy Spaces, SacredArticles, and Vestments that are often found in a Catholic church whichare also an important part of our Catholic Faith.

We also highlyrecommend that families work with their pastors, clergy and parishleaders in educating and informing them of your loved one’s challenges,so that they in turn can help support you in welcoming your entirefamily to the parish community. Working together helps to bringunderstanding and acceptance. It reminds each of us that we are allcreated in God’s Image, and together, we make up the Kingdom of God.

Jesus said, “Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them; for theKingdom of God belongs to such as these.” (Luke Chapter 18, verse 16) To readmore, click here...

Behindeachof thewords and phrases in the Lord’s Prayer lies a richarrayofconcepts. Takethe first word, for instance. Have we spentmuchtimemeditating on theword “Our”? Most of us probably have not.
Butweshould. Jesus selected every word deliberately. Perhaps weshouldspendsome equally deliberatetime meditating on His choice andwhy Heplacedit as the first word of the prayer He taught Hisdisciples.
What does it mean toask that God’s kingdom come here on earth?
The last two phrases are somewhat mysterious. Would God lead us intotemptation?
How does God deliver us from evil?
Themeditationsin this book are designed to answer these questionsandincreaseyourawareness about what Jesus was teaching us when weprayHisbeautifulprayer.
